Apprenticeship Programme insights with Rogan Phillips
At GMA Warehousing, the Apprenticeship Programme offers a unique opportunity for individuals to gain real-world experience while developing essential skills in business administration. Recently, we caught up with Rogan Phillips, one of the latest apprentices, to learn more about his journey and experience at GMA. Here's what he had to say about his role and the path he’s on.
1. Why choose the GMA Apprenticeship Programme?
Rogan Phillips found his way to the GMA Apprenticeship Programme through a recommendation from Apprenticeships Suffolk. "What drew me to the apprenticeship programme was that it was computer-based, which seemed like a good fit for my skill set," Rogan shares. A music lover, Rogan’s first impression of the GMA office was solidified when he heard "My Girl" by Madness playing—one of his favourite bands—instantly making the environment feel welcoming and familiar.
2. Daily responsibilities as a Business Admin Apprentice
Rogan's role as a Business Admin apprentice involves a variety of tasks that keep him engaged and contribute to the daily operations of GMA Warehousing. His responsibilities include:
Inputting jobs: Rogan regularly inputs jobs into the company’s system, Manpac, ensuring accurate and timely records.
Customer support: He answers questions from customers, providing information and resolving any queries they may have.
Managing subcontractors: Rogan also phones subcontractors to confirm when they’ll be arriving for collections and whether they are on time for their scheduled deliveries.
These tasks offer Rogan a hands-on experience in the world of logistics and business administration, helping him build essential skills in communication and problem-solving.
3. Balancing Learning
Balancing the demands of learning new skills while performing real-world tasks can be challenging, but Rogan has found support at GMA. "Andy and Jamie have been really helpful whenever I get stuck or have difficulties," he says. With their guidance, Rogan is able to smoothly transition between learning and applying those lessons in his daily responsibilities.
4. What Rogan enjoys most about the role
One of the highlights for Rogan in his apprenticeship has been the opportunity to meet new people and leverage the skills he already excels at. "I’ve really enjoyed getting to know new people and being able to use the skills I have plenty of talent for," he shares.
This combination of building relationships and applying his natural talents has made the role both rewarding and enjoyable for Rogan, keeping him motivated and excited to continue his journey.
5. The challenges that come with the role
Like any role, the apprenticeship comes with its challenges. For Rogan, the busiest days can be the most difficult. "Trying to manage subcontractors in the morning while finding time to complete my apprenticeship work can be tricky on busier days," he explains.
However, Rogan approaches these challenges with determination and time management. With the support of his team, he’s learning to navigate the fast-paced environment while staying on top of his apprenticeship assignments.
6. Preparing for a career in Business Administration
Rogan is confident that the GMA Apprenticeship Programme is setting him up for a successful future in business administration. "This apprenticeship is helping me build confidence, especially in handling stressful situations and dealing with customer issues," he says
7. Advice for future apprentices
When asked what advice he would give to someone considering a Business Admin Apprenticeship at GMA, Rogan offers some encouraging words: "Ask for help, and you will get it. Don’t be afraid—they are a lot nicer than you might expect, especially the bookings department."
Rogan’s positive experience highlights the supportive and collaborative atmosphere at GMA Warehousing, making it an excellent place for anyone looking to develop their career in business administration.
